Taking Pride in Inclusion

In News by northernlaw

With June being Pride Month, the team at Northern Law LLP want to celebrate the progression of LGBTQ2S+ rights in Canada. Since the 1950s, there have been countless important advancements in both law and policy with the objective to acknowledge and protect LGBTQ2S+ rights. Legal, political, and social change would not have occurred if not for the brave individuals, organizations, and coalition of activists who advocated for equality at a time when members of the LGBTQ2S+ community were being persecuted and prosecuted.

Sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression are now largely protected grounds in federal, provincial, and territorial legislation across Canada. However, it was not long ago that individuals were being fired from their jobs or dismissed from the Canadian military on the basis of sexual orientation (Vriend v Alberta, [1998] 1 S.C.R. 493). Members of the LGBTQ2S+ community continue to be a target for bigotry and discrimination.
